Character Canon History: Laurent @ Fire Emblem Wiki
Character Personality:
- The first thing one needs to know about Laurent is that he's a lot like his mother. A lot like his mother. His mother is Miriel, a scientific-minded mage who is often verbose and eloquent in her manner of speech, but a bit socially awkward. Laurent is likewise an eloquent speaker who tends to go on for far longer than anyone cares, and he's even more socially stupid than his mother is. Laurent looks up to (and idealizes) his mother, believing that she can solve any problem or mystery without fail. He has a difficult time seeing any flaws in his mother, which can serve as his own weakness. This doesn't mean that he doesn't love his father, however. Laurent clearly does care about his family, even though he often comes across as distant and cold; he makes a point of telling his father that during their support conversations.
Laurent is highly intelligent. He relies heavily on science and knowledge to form his own understanding of the world, and he often will go on lengthy speeches about his topics of interest. It's difficult to stop him once he gets started, and it's equally difficult to get him to focus on something else. Laurent focuses almost solely on the subject of his research, even if this means getting himself into trouble, such as in Paralogue 14 where he ends up against a large number of enemies he cannot hope to take out on his own, all in search of a staff. Had Chrom's army not come along, he would have been killed searching for the staff. Laurent is not normally reckless nor does he usually engage in such reckless behavior; he was instead focused on obtaining this mythical staff or at least seeing if it existed. He tends to get himself into more trouble than he's worth when he's wrapped up in his intellectual pursuits, just like his mother.
Socially, Laurent comes across as quite a bit awkward. Aside from being verbose, he tends to phrase things oddly and use larger words that alienate him from his peers. He is also incredibly mature and always has been, refusing to allow people to treat him like a child. Even his parents aren't allowed to think of him as a child, though this is mostly due to the three extra years he spent in Ylisse after travelling through time to save the world with Lucina. It's a long story. Anyway, in his support conversation with Nah, Laurent is accused of ogling Nah and being creepy in general because he's been staring at her. Laurent attempts to explain that he does this to everyone, which Nah refused to believe. He's not very good at making points when he's flustered, nor is he very good at coming up with ways to defend himself. Once he's flustered, he tends to lose a good bit of his composure and tends to mess up even more often than usual when it comes to social interactions. He's very good at alienating himself from the rest of his peers, not to mention the rest of Chrom's army.
In his support conversations with Robin (the main unit, female in this case), Laurent reveals that he worries about her health and ability to look after everything in the army. He offers to study under her and help maintain the army's budget, which he keeps a very close eye on. In his support conversations with Severa, it's revealed that he micromanages the money to a point where he's considered cheap; he rarely buys things that are not absolutely necessary. By the end of his supports with Severa, they've struck a balance between what's necessary and what will boost the army's morale, proving that he can work with others, even when he's absolutely certain what he's doing is right. He can see the error of his ways and acknowledge them, as he does in his support conversations with Severa.
Laurent is very serious about everything and takes almost everything at face-value. He tends to respond to things that were either sarcasm or asides, which goes along with his social failure mentioned earlier. Laurent practically refuses to have fun, claiming that he is a grownup and needs to act like one. In his supports with his father (regardless of who his father is), he reveals that he spent five years alone in Ylisse after traveling through time with Lucina and the other kids; he was by himself in an unfamiliar land and was incredibly lonely, but he had to put on a brave face and focus on moving forward. He's very grateful for his father's insistence that he's still his father's child, even though he still believes he's far too old for frivolities and games.
Often seen as cold and uncaring, Laurent is very shrewd and notices the most minute of details about everyone. In his supports with Noire he mentions noticing how she isn't taking care of her weapon and how she isn't eating very much. While it could be seen as just nitpicking on his part, this is Laurent's way of expressing concern for others. He looks after everyone in the army and tends to worry himself silly about every one of them, especially the other children. It's not that he doesn't believe the other children can handle themselves, it's just that he's a natural worrywart and feels the need to stick his nose into everyone's business just to make sure everything is okay. He can be a bit annoying, but he means well. Laurent's manner of speech makes this hard to figure out, however. He's very blunt about things and usually sounds displeased when he brings them up. It does sound like nitpicking most of the time and he's annoyed quite a few people with it. Laurent also used to separate himself from the others, in part due to not being sure how to interact with all of them and in part because he didn't want to get close to anyone only to lose them, like his mother and father back in his timeline. This is why he often comes off cold, but he's gotten a bit better about it now, even if he is more annoying, prying into everyone's business.
In short, Laurent is a very caring young man who attempts to ensure the success of the army when he's not studying and finding practical uses for what he studies. He's very bright, but a bit socially stupid. Laurent tries his hardest at everything he does and puts his all into everything, even though it might not seem like it. Closer inspection reveals that he's not quite as distant and callous as he might seem, and if one gets to know him, it's obvious how much he cares about the others, even though he has his own socially stupid way of showing it. Laurent is a lot like his mother - a lot like her - but he is his own person and has his own characteristics and quirks to prove it.
Character Abilities:
- In Fire Emblem: Awakening characters are allowed to have five skills in place at any time. These are Laurent's five, taken from three different classes: his starting class of Mage and the promotions of Sage and Dark Knight.

These aren't the only skills Laurent has access to, of course. Laurent is currently a Dark Knight, which means he can use both tomes and swords. He prefers using tomes as they are how he channels magic. He's very skilled with tomes and not as skilled with swords, though he can wield them.
Aside from these skills, Laurent is incredibly smart and well-read; he spends the majority of his free time studying spells (even if most are completely useless, like tiny rainbows and tiny whirlwinds).

"If mother were here, she would have solved all the mysteries this city has to offer."
Laurent sighed and flipped a page in the book he was reading. Saeng Seong was a fascinating city and one he undoubtedly would be intrigued by for quite some time, but he had yet to make any progress discovering what happened to those who had not had some form of physical contact since arrival. He had spoken at length with quite a few locals who implied that there would be consequences for not maintaining physical contact of some sort, but while they implied that the utmost consequence was death, they hadn't specified how one would die due to lack of contact. Laurent had made it his duty to find out.
Perhaps he was prying into things he had no business looking into. He had been told that numerous times in the past, but his desire for answers had always led him into trouble. He had gotten used to it quite some time ago. Answers were not often easily given. He flipped another page in the book he was reading, a thick tome on the history of Saeng Seong. Unfortunately, there was nothing in the book indicating when the city had started using touch as a means of power, or how they could harness touch as a power source at all. It looked like today had been another day of fruitless research.
"It is getting late. I'll return to my quarters for the night." Laurent said to no one in particular. Picking up the book and placing it back on the shelf. The Learning Center was where he spent most of his days since arrival; he found it fascinating and full of all sorts of information he would have never come across otherwise. He occasionally visited the strange terminals located around the city to check the network for any interesting messages, but for the most part he kept to himself, nose buried in some book or other, usually something scientific in nature.
Laurent returned to his room and went about his usual preparations for bed. He was always very methodical, doing everything exactly the same way to a nearly obsessive degree. Once he was done changing he carefully set his clothes aside (neatly folded, of course) and rested his mother's hat atop them. He smiled at the hat, though it was a smile tinged with regret. He hadn't gotten to see his mother for long before he had arrived here, but seeing her had been bittersweet regardless. She had died in his future, after all, but she was alive and well in Ylisse and that was all he could ever ask for.
He quickly settled into bed, picking up yet another book that was lying on the nightstand, flipping through the pages until he found where he had left off. A little light reading before bed was a part of his strict routine as well, and Laurent didn't hesitate to settle in.
